Where to Install a Split AC in a Room
The Right Height
Install the indoor unit high on the wall, around 2.1 to 2.5 metres from the floor. Cold air is heavier than warm air, so it sinks. Mounting the unit high lets the cold air spread across the room and fall naturally.
Leave at least 15 cm between the top of the unit and the ceiling. The unit pulls in warm air from the top, so if it’s pressed against the ceiling it can’t breathe properly.
The Right Wall
The best wall is one that lets the AC blow along the longest side of the room. For a rectangular room, that usually means mounting it on one of the shorter walls, so the air travels the full length of the room.
Where possible, choose a wall that is:
- Close to an outside wall or balcony. This keeps the copper pipe run short, which is cheaper and more efficient.
- Near a power point and a drain route. This avoids long surface pipes and trunking across the wall.
- Not in direct sunlight. Sunlight hitting the indoor unit’s sensor can make it think the room is hotter than it is.
Leave Space Around the Unit
Keep at least 15 cm of clear space on each side. Don’t install it behind curtains, above a tall wardrobe, or in a narrow corner where airflow is blocked.
Places to Avoid
- Directly above electronics such as a TV, computer or sound system. If the drain ever blocks, water can drip onto them.
- Above a heat source like a stove, oven or heater.
- Right above a door that opens to a hot corridor or the outside. Warm air coming in will confuse the thermostat.
- Facing a window with no curtains. Much of the cooling will be lost through the glass.
- In a corner hidden by furniture, where cold air gets trapped and can’t circulate.
Where to Install a Split AC in a Bedroom
The bedroom needs extra care because you spend 7–8 hours sleeping under it.
Best position: On a side wall, so the air flows across the room or toward the foot of the bed, not straight at your head.
Avoid:
- Directly above the headboard. It seems like a good idea, but cold air blowing onto your head and neck all night can cause a stiff neck, dry eyes and a blocked nose.
- Directly facing the bed at close range. A strong direct draft is uncomfortable and dries out your skin.
- Above a wardrobe or desk where you’ll need to reach clothes or work under a cold draft.
Tip: Use the swing function and set the louvres to point slightly upward at night. The air then spreads across the ceiling and falls gently, instead of blowing on you directly.
Where to Install a Split AC in a Living Room
Living rooms are larger and often open to the kitchen or dining area. Mount the unit so it blows toward the main seating area and the length of the room. For long or L-shaped rooms, two smaller units often cool better than one large unit placed at one end.
Avoid placing it above the TV wall. That’s the most common mistake in Dubai apartments, and it leads to drips on electronics and uneven cooling.
